Extraction Gravimetric

Extraction Gravimetric (Sediment Content)

ASTM D473

lab-equipment13

This test method covers the determination of sediment in crude oils and fuel oils by extraction with toluene. The precision applies to a range of sediment levels from 0.01% to 0.40% mass, although higher levels may be determined.

A test portion of the sample is placed in a refractory thimble. Toluene is gently boiled and its vapors condensed and allowed to drip into the sample funnel. The toluene washes out all of the crude oil or fuel oil leaving the insoluble residue only in the thimble. The mass of the residue is calculated as a percentage and is referred to as the sediment by extraction. Includes condenser thimble basket, water cup and extraction thimble.

Why we need to know?

  • Sediment is present in the lubricating oil is not soluble in gasoline, ethanol and benzene, solvents or colloidal precipitate suspension. Most of these impurities iron sand and the like, as well as to bring some of the additives, organic solvents insoluble salts. Typically, the lubricant base oil is controlled by a mechanical impurities 0.005% (0.005% or less complex machine is considered to be no).
  • Sediment means petroleum or petroleum products in the oil and provisions solvent insoluble precipitate or suspended solids, such as silt, dust, iron, fiber and some insoluble salts. Sediment can be removed by sedimentation or filtration. For light oil, the mechanical impurities can clog oil, prompting the raw rubber or corrosion; boiler fuel can clog the nozzle, reducing combustion efficiency, increased fuel consumption; right lubricant, it will destroy the film, increased wear, clogged oil filter is to promote deposit formation and so on.
