KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s desire to increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production faces hurdles, including restricted feedstock supply, high production costs, and economic viability concerns that could impede the industry’s long-term growth. During Aviation Sustainability Day 2026, industry leaders highlighted that local supplies of discarded cooking oil and agricultural leftovers may be insufficient to supply future SAF demand, especially after 2035. These concerns underscore the importance of alternate feedstock sources, enhanced recovery technologies, and more investment in sustainable fuel production. These advancements may also open up prospects for resource recovery and circular economy efforts as Malaysia seeks to reduce aircraft emissions.
