KUALA LUMPUR – According to data from the Environment Department’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), air quality has dropped into “Unhealthy” territory across half of Malaysia’s monitoring network, with 34 of 68 stations recording unsafe Air Pollutant Index (API) levels ranging from 101 to 200. Driven by a combination of continuous transboundary smoke and local emissions, key industrial and urban zones saw severe air pollution, with Johan Setia in Selangor recording the nation’s highest API at 198, dangerously near to the “Very Unhealthy” 200 level. Heavy haze also engulfed manufacturing hubs in Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Sarawak, prompting environmental authorities to increase air monitoring and regulatory compliance expectations for industrial boiler emissions, dust suppression, and factory stack discharges along affected industrial corridors.
