UN Warns of Intensifying El Niño, Expected to Peak in December

GENEVA – The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the developing El Niño might become one of the most extreme episodes since 1950, peaking in December 2026. The weather phenomenon is expected to bring greater temperatures, longer droughts, and erratic rainfall patterns to affected areas, creating worries about agricultural production, water availability, and environmental sustainability. These conditions may also interrupt plantation operations and put further strain on industrial water management, emphasising the need for firms to improve climate resilience and environmental risk management.
